The Role: Sensus, a Xylem brand, seeks to hire a Materials Scientist Engineer for the development and implementation of utility metering product mechanical hardware while protecting and interfacing with complex electronics and embedded systems to gas, water, and electric meters as well as AMI systems.  The position will be located in Uniontown, PA and will require periodic travel to other engineering facilities in North Carolina, suppliers, and contract manufacturers.

Sensus engineers have the opportunity to be part of a specialized development team involved with the following:

  • Development of mechanical devices, environmental packages, interfaces, and adapters used in rugged environments and in high volume electronic applications.
  • Develop measuring and communication devices for water, gas, and electric applications, including both solid state and mechanical interfaces.
  • Developing the building blocks, tools and methods for new core features and functionality for future products. 
  • Lead the selection and implementation of new materials, methods, and processes for the enhancement of existing and new products.

Job Responsibilities:

The Material Scientist Engineer is responsible for supporting the development and sustaining engineering of the Sensus portfolio of metrology and AMI products that interface with water, gas, and electric metering products and systems. This position is responsible for supporting the product development team on designs that meet utility and industry requirements as well as internal requirements for cost effectiveness, accuracy, performance, and reliability.  Additionally, this position will:

  • Become the subject matter expert on and when needed develop, document, and perform tests and test protocols on subjects including but not limited to: water vapor transmission rate (WVTR/MVTR), galvanic corrosion, chemical resistance, chlorine and chloramine, urethane and epoxy sealants and potting compounds, paralyene and conformal coatings, plasma treatment, surface pre-treatments for coatings, chromate conversion, paint, and powder coating, working knowledge of NSF 61, accelerated weathering testing, rubber aging, and general knowledge of various materials as they relate to the listed topics (wide variety of thermoplastics, cast and machined metals, glass, drawn sheet metal, rubber compounds)
  • Experience and skill in the following, including but not limited to: materials evaluation and identification (DSC, FTIR, HPLC, UPLC, GC, SEM, EDX, etc.), mechanical testing (tensile testing, lap shear, torsion, bending, compressive strength, impact, etc.).
  • Experience designing, executing, analyzing, and documenting protocols and experiments.
  • Capable of integrating results from various studies and utilize the information to perform follow on work.
  • Able to develop novel experiments and techniques and to objectively critique results from experiments performed by self and others
  • Assist Engineering and Quality with investigating and analyzing defective product returned from customers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS, MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering with extensive hands-on experience.
  • At least 8 + years of experience with product development.  Experience with rugged environmental and submersible enclosures, utility metering products, and sensor based products for high volume production preferred. 
  • Familiarity with common product manufacturing processes such as hot plate welding, plasma treatments, as well as potting and parylene coating.
  • Product testing and root cause analysis skills preferred.  Familiarity with regulatory agency requirements such as NSF, ANSI, AWWA, UL and Intrinsic Safety a plus.
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast paced team environment where you will interface regularly with mechanical, electrical, software, firmware, and system test engineers on system level design development. 
  • Desire and ability to learn new tools, processes, and design techniques.  
  • Excellent communications skills with the ability to convey technical concepts in business terms.
