Job Description:

Metrology Technician II or III – Dimensional

Summary:

Independently determines and performs operations required to calibrate and certify physical/mechanical Measuring & Test Equipment (M&TE), maintaining traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), or by reference to fundamental constants of nature. These calibrations may include, but are not limited to, the following disciplines: electrical, dimensional, thermodynamic, mass, force, pressure, and torque - in both a field and laboratory environment.

This open position is for a highly experienced Technician primarily in the Dimensional discipline in support of MSFC programs like Space Launch Systems (SLS). The MSFC Metrology and Calibration Laboratory operates in almost every discipline area, at primary, secondary, and working levels. This position also supports Mass, so experience in Mass would be beneficial. The Dimensional discipline requires extensive knowledge and experience using the following equipment:

Dimensional

  • General Purpose Hand Tools - Micrometers, Vernier calipers, Dial indicators, Bore gages, Plug and Ring gages, Pin gages.

  • Pratt & Whitney

    • Lab Master UniversalMeasuring Machine

    • Super Mic Model C Measuring Machine

  • Mahr CiM 828 Universal Measuring Machine

  • Renishaw

    • XL-80 Laser System

    • RX-10 Rotary Indexer

  • Taft-Pierce Angle Generator

  • HB-400 Optical Comparator with Metlogic2 software

  • LFM-713-ZM3-LED-MQDF Vision System with Metlogic3 software

  • Height Gage Micro Optical Model 25

  • Tesa Touch probe indicator Model 80

  • Leica AT901 Laser Tracker and software

  • Gage Blocks – various types and manufacture

Mass

  • General Purpose Scales and Balances - Ohaus, AND, Mettler, Omega, GSE, Sartorious, Condec , as well as others

  • Mettler Toledo

    • Mass Comparator X64003L

    • Mass Comparator XP56

    • Mass Comparator AT1005

  • Sartorious Mass Comparator CCE 10000S

  • Various primary, transfer, and working level mass sets.

The technician will be required to pass a physical evaluation and achieve certifications per MSFC/NASA requirements. There is some in-situ calibrations and obtaining/maintaining a valid state driver’s license is required. The technician must be proficient with computers and general software, especially Microsoft Excel.

Major Duties:

  • Utilize calibration methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems, in consideration of accuracy and precision requirements.

  • Identify magnitude of error sources contributing to uncertainty of results to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative terms.

  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in complex M&TE using theories of operation, block diagrams, schematics, logic trees, and software diagnostics to the component level.

  • Provide training to other technicians on metrology principles, resolving technical problems, and complicated measurement theory.

  • Inspect measuring and test equipment for preventive maintenance, cleanliness, and safety requirements, analyze and interpret results of measurements and calibrations using mathematical formulas, and document results of measurements and calibrations on calibration certificates and calibration correction charts.

  • Other duties include creating calibration procedures, selecting suitable substitution of standard M&TE, and entering documentation into computer systems.

  • This individual shall perform any and all duties assigned by the Laboratory Manager, within their scope of knowledge, in the performance of the contract.

    Education/Experience:

This position requires an Associate degree in Metrology, Physics, or relevant discipline; or equivalent technical training (Military or Civilian) and 10 years minimum experience in Dimensional metrology discipline or a related field, or any equivalent combination of education/experience.

For our current needs, experience in the disciplines of Dimensional and Mass are needed. Salary will be commensurate with direct experience, education, and discipline capability. Salary range for this posting is estimated to be $23.80 to $34.50 per hour. Maintaining ASQ Certified Calibration Technician will receive an additional hourly compensation.

The Metrology and Calibration Laboratory (MCL) at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) provides NASA/MSFC programs, projects, and infrastructure with advanced metrology and calibration support, assuring NASA maintains the most technically advanced and properly applied measurement concepts and processes.

The MSFC mission involves science and engineering measurements in many specialized and highly complex disciplines. In many of these supported measurements, the MCL retains the only capability in NASA, and in a few, the only capability in the nation. To meet these needs, our team must maintain technical excellence across a wide range of disciplines, be customer responsive, and willing to meet new challenges that arise daily.
