In addition to equipment breakdown, we offer Internet of Things (IoT) Advisory Services, cyber coverages, including data compromise and identity theft recovery, as well as renewable energy insurance products such as solar shortfall and unit outage coverages among others. We actively research, test and utilize all kinds of mobile technology including, but not limited to, drones, 3D mapping technology, smart glasses, vibration monitors, and infrared cameras.

About the Job

We are looking for a Computer Scientist / Engineer with expertise in machine learning focused on equipment to join our company as an integral member of the HSB's Engineering team at our Corporate Headquarters in Hartford, CT. In addition to providing equipment-focused machine learning subject matter expertise, a primary goal of this position is to increase our equipment knowledge and drive this learning back through our underwriting, claims and new products business units with the ultimate goal of improving our overall business results.

More specifically, the successful candidate's responsibilities and tasks will include but are not be limited to:
  • Keep HSB abreast of new machine learning developments and technology applied to equipment in relevant business ecosystems through focused research and proactive development of relationships with relevant Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)
  • Leverage HSB acquisitions and investments in technology companies to extract learning and application of their machine learning algorithms to HSB business
  • Develop new service offerings, either standalone or tied to new or existing insurance coverages, that utilize or are underpinned by machine learning algorithms
  • Identify, design and conduct machine learning projects, both internal and in concert with universities, focused on equipment and systems
  • Increase HSB market leader credibility and visibility on relevant machine learning advances focused on equipment & systems through periodic publications, conference & workshop presentations & participation in selected professional associations
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with HSB's Equipment Technology team members and other HSB business units to help identify and develop better and new products and services
Qualifications Minimum qualifications for this position include:
  • Master of Science in Computer Science with machine learning emphasis or relevant discipline
  • 2 years practical experience with company(s) utilizing or offering machine learning tools or services in commercial settings involving equipment or PhD in Computer Science with machine learning emphasis
  • Certificate in Machine Learning or Machine Learning and Data mining or equivalent
  • Core technical skills and experience including computer science fundamentals and programming, probability and statistics, data modeling and evaluation, software engineering and system design
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, project management and business plan abilities; sound writing, communications and interpersonal skills; soft business/marketing skills
  • Approximately 25% business travel
Additional desired qualifications include:
  • PhD degree in Computer Science with machine learning emphasis or other relevant discipline
  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline; MBA
  • Graduate certificate in Artificial Intelligence
  • Post-degree specialized, topical training and/or experience with relevant software and modeling packages (e.g., scikit-learn, Theano, Spark MLlib, TensorFlow, etc.)
  • Professional Engineer license
