As Director of Computational Biology\: As a member of the Global Computational Biology Organization, provide strong organizational, technological and scientific leadership of the US Research Computational Biology Organization to support the development of New Therapeutic Concepts and discovery of biomarkers to enable early and robust development of molecules towards Proof of Clinical Principle (PoCP). Support to be provided across all needed therapy areas, technologies and scientific platforms. Ensures future competitive positions through management and integration of new technology initiatives and data, both internal and external, in alignment with the overall aspiration of the Innovation Unit. Represents the US organization in the global Computational Biology Organization and influences the direction of the team to become an area of strength and differentiation for BI.

 

Ensures excellence in implementation and management of the global computational partner/expert/core model.

 

As Computational Biology Partner for Cancer Immunology\: Contributes to the development of Cancer Immunology Research TA strategies, especially target identification and validation, and identification of translational biomarkers to enable rapid clinical progression around testing of novel therapeutic concepts. Champions the integration of genomics data and bioinformatics tools as a foundation to drive innovation in the TA portfolio integrating internal and external collaborations and capabilities. Anticipates and plans for future capabilities and data required to support TA strategies and represents these to the Computational Biology organization.  Ensures that the analysis plans for TA project portfolio are high quality and in place. Interfaces with Comp Bio experts, IT, and other functions globally to ensure the TA bioinformatics needs are met.

Duties & Responsibilities\:

  • Responsibility for the US Research Computational Biology organization to provide scientific, technical and organizational leadership including creating a culture focused on quality, innovation and strong partnership with the Discovery Research TAs. Place highest priority on projects where CompBio will have strongest impact on progression or achievement of Proof of Clinical Principle (PoCP) while maintaining strong support and capabilities establishment for the early discovery organization. Effective partnerships with internal TAs, TMCP, and IT functions to deliver analysis plans and data on time and with excellent scientific quality. Ensures the effective implementation of the partner/expert/core model in the US.

  • Contributes to the global organization by influencing the strategic direction/plan for Computational Biology (Mid and Long Term) vetted by an external advisory board. Influences/contributes to global topics regarding access and use of clinical data for research purposes.  Participates influentially in the global computational biology organization.

  • Influences the development of Cancer Immunology Research TA strategies, especially target identification and validation, and identification of translational biomarkers to enable rapid clinical progression around testing of novel therapeutic concepts (to include identification of biomarkers,

  • Proof of Pharmacological Principal concepts, patient populations for PoCP, PoCP criteria). Champions the integration of genomics data and bioinformatics tools as a foundation to drive innovation in the TA portfolio integrating internal and external collaborations and capabilities, including developing an external strategy to support the TA. Anticipates and plans for future capabilities and data required to support TA strategies and represents these to the Computational Biology organization.  

  • Ensures strong alignment and excellent collaboration with Computational Biology Partners for Immune Modulation and Cancer Research to identify synergies, avoid redundancies and distribute strategic projects.

  • Ensures that the analysis plans for TA project portfolio are high quality and in place. Interfaces with Comp Bio experts, IT, and other functions globally to ensure the TA bioinformatics needs are met.

  • Represents bioinformatics needs and priorities of the TA to the global computational biology (CB, communicates/translates TA strategy into CB organization to ensure proper resources and capabilities)

  • Manage the US department operating budget, in alignment with the SLC Sponsors including outsourcing and capital components, to ensure that financial and people resources are aligned and managed to achieve delivery goals.

  • Support presentation of key Comp Bio results at scientific meetings and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  • Develop a culture of accountability, results, innovation and collegiality within the Computational Biology organization by establishing performance expectations and hiring and developing top talent to achieve organizational delivery goals. Through the leadership of others ensure employees are appropriately trained, following corporate policies, SOPs and practices without compromising quality.

Requirements\:

  • PhD from an accredited institution with minimum eight (8) years’ experience in biochemistry/immunology/molecular biology and/or genomics with technical expertise in informatics.

  • Recognized expertise through publications and presentations in the area of computational biology with knowledge of target discovery, biomarker discovery and development

  • Strong Industry experience preferred with additional academic experience accepted.  

  • Candidate needs to have demonstrated achievement in impacting pipeline and or development of scientific strategies via Computational Biology

  • Demonstrated experience and success in supporting programs at various stages in the value chain through computational biology programs

  • Deep scientific knowledge in a discipline such as Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Informatics including application to computational biology and ability to apply this to the design and development of NTCs and Biomarker discovery;  must have a proven track record of applying computational biology from a very early project stage through PoCP.

Desired Skills, Experience and Abilities\:

  • At least five (5) years leadership experience leading people at all levels through challenging scientific priorities and objectives preferred

  • Experience working in global matrix organizations

  • Strong insights to immunology and especially cancer and immunology preferred.

Eligibility Requirements\:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
