Job Title:  Medical Laboratory Technician

Department:    Clinical Laboratory, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Generalist



The Medical Laboratory Technician independently performs detailed and complex analyses of patient specimens. Recognizes problems, identifies causes (technical, instrument or physiological), synthesizes alternatives and determines solutions. Confirms, interprets, correlates, verifies and reports normal and abnormal patient results based on an in-depth knowledge of instrument functions, physiological principles and disease conditions. Trains and monitors other clinical laboratory personnel. Uses laboratory computer systems to obtain relevant patient information and input test results.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

1.      Two-year Associates degree from an accredited college, and certified.

2.      Certification as a medical technologist (or equivalent) or as a categorical technologist (e.g., C, H, I, BB, M) by a recognized professional organization (e.g., ASCP, AMT) is preferred.

3.      Other approved Board Certifications as required for specialty testing such as: American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB), American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC), American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT), American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI), American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG), American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology (ABMLI), American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM), National Registry for Clinical Chemists (NRCC), or other board deemed comparable by HHS. NOTE: ABFT and NRCC also certify non-doctorial individuals; however, the director of high-complexity testing must have a doctoral degree. An acceptable doctoral degree is a Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D., Doctor of Science – D.Sc. If acceptable to the board, a Doctor of Dental Surgery – D.D.S., Doctor of Veterinary Medicine – D.V.M., Doctor of Public Health – Dr.P.H.

4.      A working knowledge of word processing software (e.g. Word) and demonstrated ability to learn and work efficiently with a variety of computer applications/systems as well as the ability to learn and work efficiently with a variety of laboratory computer systems.

5.      Oral and written communication needs to be professional, clear and concise.

6.      Must be able to work any shift, holiday and/or weekend as needed. 

7.      Must be able to travel among company sites as needed.

 Essential Functions

Patient Care

  • Consistently verifies that only properly identified and acceptable patient specimens are analyzed.
  • Collects, prepares, transports, and/or stores specimens using established procedures to ensure specimen integrity.
  • Correlates test results with the patient's condition, detecting and reporting significant changes, ambiguous results, abnormal results and/or incompatibilities keeping the immediate supervisor apprised as appropriate. Consults with Clinical Pathologists and/or recommends additional follow-up testing as appropriate.
  • Provides prompt notification and documentation of any critical test results obtained according to department protocol.

Operations Support

  • Prepares reagents or media, including necessary computations, from prescribed procedures.
  • Conducts established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, media and products, evaluating results and implementing and documenting corrective action when indicated.
  • Performs routine, high volume and technically demanding analyses and procedures using a variety of manual techniques and instrumentation, correctly calculating results as needed.
  • Operates, calibrates and conducts performance checks and maintains assigned clinical laboratory equipment or instruments. Recognizes and corrects instrument malfunctions, documenting any corrective action needed. Refers problems to immediate supervisor as needed.
  • Assists with establishing and maintaining supply inventories. Ensures that adequate, daily supplies are available in all assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Contributes to the development of new department policies, testing procedures and instrumentation.
  • Serves as an information resource for medical residents, new and/or less skilled laboratory personnel, clients and Client Support staff providing training as requested by supervisor.
  • Monitors work of other medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians and non-technical personnel as requested by supervisor.
  • Performs all of the essential duties and responsibilities of a medical laboratory technician as needed.



  • Follows required safety, biological and chemical handling procedures to include wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Follows all required procedures, departmental and organizational policies.
  • Satisfactorily performs in accordance with established performance standards.
  • Provides mentoring and training of new or existing employees as needed.
