Job Description:
The Senior Engineer Scientist – Solidification will lead Solidification Laboratory operation and maintenance. The position is to assist project leaders to conduct R&D projects in the Casting Technology Division with an emphasis on solidification processing, alloy/process/microstructure relationship, and advanced casting technology development. This position is also responsible for providing technical support in the area of alloying, grain refining and cast microstructure/metal quality control to Arconic casting facilities worldwide.

​Major activities/Key challenges:
  • Develop capabilities and knowledge required to support major corporate R&D initiatives involving solidification and casting.
  • Conduct bench scale testing to evaluate new concepts, ideas, and feasibility critical for the development of innovative casting process.
  • Perform cast microstructure analysis using optical microscopy and SEM/EDX in support of new process/new alloy development
  • Conduct bench scale testing to evaluate the performance of alloying materials and grain refiners
  • Provide metallurgical support including ingot quality assessment and casting defect analysis and recommend and implement solutions to Arconic casting facilities worldwide.
  • Lead Solidification Laboratory operation and maintenance.

​Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education:
  • Relationship between composition, processing, and cast microstructure evolution in metal alloys
  • Use and application of multi-component phase diagrams
  • Engineering principles of heat, mass and fluid flow as related to solidification processing and casting operations.
  • Casting of high performance alloys such as aluminum-, titanium-, and nickel-based materials


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science/Engineering from accredited institution
  • Minimum of 1 year experience using optical metallography and SEM/EDX and characterization and interpretation of cast microstructures
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in multi-component phase diagram calculation tools/software and application.
  • Strong familiarity with grain refining theories and practices
  • Sound knowledge in casting technologies including direct chill ingot casting, investment casting, and vacuum induction melting/casting
  • Hands-on experience operating optical and/or electron microscopy equipment
