Additional Information:
High School diploma or equivalent must include basic arithmetic, algebra, reading, and writing, as well as some basic chemistry skills (ability to identify medications requiring specialized handling).

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
Required:
National CPhT certification required upon hire and must be maintained.
Pharmacy Technicians must register with the NC Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of hire as a Pharmacy Tech. Pharmacy students that are currently enrolled in a school of pharmacy are not required to register with the NC Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.
JOB SUMMARY:
This position is accountable to work under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist and assist in the various activities of the pharmacy department in order to provide quality patient care for the following patient age categories: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric, depending on the clinical setting. Pharmacy technicians will function in accordance with established procedures and guidelines; the supervising pharmacist must approve deviations from this.

MAJOR WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs all functions and processes of a LEVEL ONE technician.Independently and consistently performs Technician Level I functions. Anticipates customer/departmental needs and willingly communicates to appropriate personnel. (35%)

Records patient medication histories.Demonstrates thorough knowledge of medication history standard and workflow. Communicates handoffs and follow-ups effectively. Takes medication history in a timely manner (average of 2 histories/hr). Maintains completeness and accuracy rates of greater than 90 percent. (35%)

Establishes and maintains workflow. Prioritizes, assesses workflow and evaluates processes for modification and improvement. Consistently approaches workload in a proactive fashion. Works with team to ensure consistent workflow despite interruptions. Seeks confirmation from supervisor. Consistently assesses workflow and ensures all job activities are completed in a timely and accurate manner. Provides leadership to enhance team environment. Advocates the importance of sharing information among team members throughout the day and during change of shifts. (10%)

Assists in orientation of new staff and students. Willingly assists in orientation and training of new staff and students. Communicates and demonstrates procedures accurately. Conveys patience and understanding throughout the learning process. Seeks feedback and follow-up to ensure learning has occurred. (10%)

Performs departmental record keeping, stocking, inventory control and replenishment. Assists buyer in maintaining/replenishing medication/IV solutions and supplies. Anticipates supply needs and communicates appropriately. Ensures stock is rotated and expired medications/IV solutions are pulled in a timely manner. Completes record keeping accurately and efficiently. (10%)

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Occurs under one-third of the time:
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens
  • Hazardous waste and/or toxic/caustic chemicals

    Additional information on working conditions:
  • Sufficiently mobile to move around to various hospitals and other health network locations and transport items of 5 - 30 pounds.

    EXPERIENCE:
    All requirements for Pharmacy Technician I, plus one year of Cone Health hospital Pharmacy Technician experience.
    Two years of Pharmacy Technician work experience.

    Additional information on Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Level 'XP' or higher on all major work activity job functions on last performance review.
    Ability to perform simple math skills.
    Ability to perform repetitive motions including bending, twisting, stooping, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift 10 pounds and may require lifting up to 40 pounds to counter height of 3 - 4 feet five times daily. Ability to push rolling carts weighing 300 pounds with handles at 3.5 - 4 foot level daily.
    Ability to stand for long periods of time and the ability to climb one to two flights of stairs as needed.
    Specific vision abilities including color vision, depth perception, and ability to focus. Physical job demands may be subject to possible modifications to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Medium Work:
    Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time), and/or; 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and/or; greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

    Hear and differentiate low volume sounds in order to make judgments regarding actions needed

    Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)
