Job Objective:

Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Laboratory Assistant Director, the Laboratory Director and the Laboratory Medical Director, the Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist – Department is responsible for all areas of assigned departments.  Duties include technical support of assigned area, evaluation of Quality Control, coordinating and providing technical training and orientation, completing assigned competency testing, maintenance of policies and procedures, and new instrument evaluation and implementation as needed.  In addition, the Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist – Department assumes responsibility for the laboratory in the absence of the Laboratory Director, the Laboratory Assistant Director, and the Laboratory Supervisor.        

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. General
  1. Fulfills all essential duty requirements of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist as needed
  1. Technical
  1. Evaluates Quality Control data and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision
  2. Provides technical support for Phlebotomists, Technicians and Clinical Laboratory Scientists
  3. Coordinates/provides technical training/orientation for the Department Technicians, Medical Laboratory  Technicians, and Clinical Laboratory Scientists as needed
  4. Coordinates and assures compliance with competency testing as related to department responsibilities
  1.  Non-technical
  1. Communicates with laboratory staff, nursing staff, and physicians concerning any deviations regarding testing and reporting of results
  2. Takes sick calls and assists in replacement of staff when necessary
  3. Attends required meetings as instructed by the Laboratory Director
  1. Additional Duties
  1. Blood Bank/Donor Center
  1. Implements, maintains and revises all department policies and procedures
  2. Coordinates new instrumentation evaluation, installation and validation within the department
  3. Assists with the collection and analysis of workload data
  4. Coordinates proficiency testing including corrective actions when necessary
  5. Completes all competency testing relative to the department
  6. Assists with regulatory inspections as necessary
  7. Responsible for the manufacture of blood products that follow the safety, purity and potency according to regulations established by the FDA and AABB
  1. Chemistry/Special Chemistry
  1. Implements, maintains and revises all department policies and procedures
  2. Coordinates new instrumentation evaluation, installation and validation within the department
  3. Assists with the collection and analysis of workload data
  4. Coordinates proficiency testing including corrective actions when necessary
  5. Completes all competency testing relative to the department
  6. Assists with regulatory inspections as necessary
  1. Hematology/Coagulation/Urinalysis
  1. Implements, maintains and revises all department policies and procedures
  2. Coordinates new instrumentation evaluation, installation and validation within the department
  3. Assists with the collection and analysis of workload data
  4. Coordinates proficiency testing including corrective actions when necessary
  5. Completes all competency testing relative to the department
  6. Assists with regulatory inspections as necessary
  1. Microbiology
  1. Implements, maintains and revises all department policies and procedures
  2. Coordinates new instrumentation evaluation, installation and validation within the department
  3. Assists with the collection and analysis of workload data
  4. Coordinates proficiency testing including corrective actions when necessary
  5. Completes all competency testing relative to the department
  6. Assists with regulatory inspections as necessary
  1. Evening Shift
  1. Oversees evening shift staffing, specimen procurement, testing, and result reporting
  1. Night Shift
  1. Oversees night shift staffing, specimen procurement, testing, and result reporting

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Transports specimens and supplies between the main hospital lab and satellite locations
  • Adds support to other Laboratory staff as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of how laboratory results apply and affect the care and treatment of patients
  • Knowledge of specimen and testing requirements
  • Knowledge of safe handling of biological specimens
  • Knowledge to recognize deviations from normal standards
  • Knowledge of departmental and hospital policies and procedures that support the provision of service
  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups and proficiency in required area

Education and Experience:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree that will satisfy the requirements for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the State of California Department of Public Health

Experience

  • Knowledge generally acquired through three years of general clinical laboratory experience
  • Minimum of one year experience at an acute care hospital is desirable

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Possession of a current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the State of California Department of Public Health

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform duties in a normal hospital clinical laboratory environment, which includes exposure to chemicals, biohazards, handling of biological specimens, and use of PPE.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for transportation of specimens and supplies.
  • May require extended periods of sitting and data entry.
  • Requires frequent lifting of less than 10 lbs., with occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
