Position Requirements:

A.Licensure/Certification/Registration: Registered or eligible as per a nationally recognized certification agency such as ASCP or NCA.(HEW Certification will be considered commensurate with ASCP).

Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology. Associates degree in Medical Technology and ten (10) years of clinical laboratory experience will be considered commensurate with educational requirements stated above.

Six years experience in a clinical laboratory environment.

D.Special qualifications: 
Good communication skills and proficient computer skills. Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.

Position Summary:

Performs hematologic, chemical, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic and microbiologic testing in a prompt and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies. Implements new instrumentation. Sets up new methodologies, develops procedural protocols, and trains lab personnel in the use of instrumentation. Participates in QA activities and supports the hospital in meeting JCAHO and CAP accreditation standards. Implements new instrumentation. Assures that CAP guidelines are followed and standards are consistently met.

Patient Rights/Organizational Ethics 

1.Employee reflects HCA values and sensitivity to HCA’s ethical and compliance principles in his or her daily activities.
2.Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care.

Assessment of Patients 

1.Reviews all results for clerical correction, reliability and sensitivity in view of the patient’s clinical condition.
2.Notifies appropriate personnel of problems related to specimen collection or testing.

Care of Patients 

1.Ensures specimen integrity (i.e., I.D., sample requirements) for optimal results.
2.Performs testing with strict adherence to defined policies and procedures.
3.Calls critical results per policy, documents.
4.Receives and refers samples to outside laboratories, completing appropriate documentation.
5.Utilizes a collaborative interdisciplinary process to provide appropriate patient/family education.

Improving Organizational Performance 

1.Participates in meetings, committees and continuing education to improve individual, departmental and organizational performance. Attendance/Review of Department Meeting (>70%)
2.Completes annual requirements for department, this includes the Quarterly QA reports ans Competency challenges. These are to be submitted within the allotted time constraints.
3.Deals with conflict and channels concerns appropriately.
4.Accepts constructive criticism. Handles failures constructively.
5.Demonstrates a concern for efficiency and cost effectiveness.
6.Performs other appropriate clinical and administrative duties as assigned.


1.Utilizes ethical and professional behavior reflecting the mission of HCA.

3.Serves as a clinical resource for physicians and other departments.
4.Builds and maintains positive relationships within the department and hospital.

1..Knowledgeable of the need to report suspected and identified medical/health care errors to the supervisor and/or through the facility occurrence reporting system as evidenced by verbalizing examples of reportable medical errors and appropriately submitting occurrence reports.
2. Knowledgeable of the need to report actual and potential patient safety issues to the supervisor and/or through the facility occurrence reporting system as evidenced by verbalizing examples of reportable patient safety issues and appropriately submitting occurrence reports.
3.Demonstrates that patient safety is an integral part of regular duties by:
a ) Identifying and reporting patient safety issues
b)Verbalizing examples of patient safety issues
Participation in department meetings where patient safety issues are discussed
4. Understands that reporting of medical/health care errors and safety issues are non-punitive.
5..Knows how to report a medical/health care error and safety issues as evidenced by demonstration of proper report entry.
